Since beginning my massage practice in 2008 I have come to understand the importance of listening closely to each client so I can offer them a holistic experience that may use many different modalities of body work depending on their individual needs. While I can offer clients a typical massage session, what I have come to find is that somatic centered work has been the most powerful and the most healing and it is what I most often feel called to do. You can learn more below!

While I love somatic work, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. If that does not feel right for you and you just want a good-old-fashioned massage to ease the aches and pains… we can do that too! You can let me know what you are looking for when you book.

Somatic Centered Bodywork

What is somatic centered bodywork?

Somatic centered bodywork refers to a type of bodywork that focuses on the body as a means to access and heal emotional experiences by promoting awareness of physical sensations and integrating them with thoughts and feelings that may be present during a session. It can be a deeper way to address stress stored within the body; it emphasizes the connection between mind and body, utilizing techniques like guided awareness and breath work while also experiencing the physical benefits of bodywork.

Life events, not just traumatic events but the stresses we encounter in our daily lives, impact our physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual being as a whole.

Somatic embodiment practices use the body as a tool for healing through self-awareness, mindfulness, connection, self-regulation and finding balance. It explores the relationship between our physical being, our thoughts, emotions and energy, oftentimes resulting in a release of both physical and emotional stresses and allowing healing to occur.

Healing happens when the conditions are right, when you feel safe and when you have sufficient resources—both inner strengths and outer support—to allow old energies to process and release and to learn to trust the wisdom of your body and its ability to heal from the inside out.

What does a somatic centered bodywork session look like?

I work from a place of compassion and non-judgment. Holding space for your own healing intentions.

Taking a few minutes before getting on the table to connect and set an intention for the session is helpful. Sometimes that can be a deep conversation, sometimes just taking a few grounding breaths together, settling in and allowing anything to arise that might want to guide your session.. and sometimes we don’t quite know until we are on the table what our intention is, that’s ok too. What is important is allowing ourselves those few minutes to pause, breathe and ground into the moment and simply create the safe and supported space for anything that may want to arise… and then once you are on the table there is nothing to do, simply ease into the supported space of the table to rest deeply…. nothing to do, no thinking needs to be done, no solving, no fixing… just allowing.

A session often starts with an invitation to turn inward and bring your awareness to the body and begin to offer the body an invitation to rest, through guided breathing and body scans we can begin to tune in to what the body is telling us. We begin to bring our awareness to the sensations present and the emotions that may arise. As the body settles, it begins the process of healing.

The time on the table is gently guided, allowing you to stay present and attuned to the experience. Offering you the opportunity to work with anything that arises in a safe and supported space if that feels right, or allowing you to simply be with the experience with compassionate awareness.
